Once Upon a love is written post-Civil War and captures the lives Amanda a women who has run away from her brother in Baltimore, Jake a carpenter in California and Jakes two nieces and nephew who were left orphaned after the War.  Jake is there uncle and has agreed to take care of them and Amanda has fallen in love with them during the long trip to California. Jake who knows nothing about raising children asks Amanda to go home with them for 60 days (while she waits for her “fiancé” to be released from jail). Upon arriving home Jake’s quick wit and kitchen skills keep the family from starving.  While settling into there new lives Amanda’s brother threatens her with legal action to make her return to her home and marry a man of his choosing.  Jake has some hard to decisions to make as to how much he is willing to risk to keep Amanda and the children together.

Jake is a man who doesn’t believe in love and Amanda is a women who wants to believe that the fairytales she tells that children are true.  The story follows Jake learning to accept the children as his own and figuring out that maybe it isn’t only the children that need Amanda. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a book to lose themselves in on a rainy day.  It is the kind of book which makes you smile and laugh out loud. Three cheers to the author!
