Lauren Richman is a public relations specialist struggling to make ends meet and dissatisfied with her long-time friendship with Rocky (who is pressing to be more than a friend), when she rescues a man being attacked by thugs in a parking garage. The man is Professor Luis Hernandez, noted Mayan archaeologist, and the muggers are after a treasure map drawn by the professor’s grandfather. Lauren follows Luis to his archeological dig deep in the Yucatan jungle, where they battle villains and thieves in their search for the ancient treasure.

The vivid descriptions let the reader feel the heavy, humid air of the jungle, hear the howler monkeys at night, and smell the exotic vegetation. The villains are villainous and the action scenes exciting and fast-paced. What didn’t work for me was the romance. Lauren falls into bed with Luis almost at first sight, but I never felt the emotional connection. She seemed shallow at times, and I simply wasn’t drawn to the character of the hero.
